History:
The exotic island of Aruba, a former Dutch Colony, is closer to the
United States than you might think - just two-and-a-half hour flight
from Miami - making the island a hot spot for tourists. Its capital
city, Oranjestad, is home to Ling & Sons IGA Super Center.
The Ling family's roots in the retail food business goes back more than 50 years, when Jimin Ling, Sr., left his native China to at an acquaintance's store in Surinam, South America. In 1936 he traveled to Aruba where he started his first store together with two partners. They set up shop in San Nicholas, which was at the time a booming ESSO refinery town. A couple of year later WWII, Ling expanded his business by opening his first grocery store.
In the late 1960's, with the help of his oldest son Jimin Ling, who had worked at Safeway in Hawaii, Ling converted his store to the self-service concept. That store has grown over the years into the now-famous Ling and Sons IGA Super Center, which is known in Aruba for its innovation and leadership in the food business.
This family-owned and -operated business is now run by the second Ling generation. Clifton Ling is the owner and general manager, his wife Ingrid is the operations manager and Yolanda Ling, Clifton's sister, is the manager of the store safety and security.
